However, they need to be compatible with the wheel rim, forks and frame. Pneumatic tyres are generally the strongest starting point for gravel paths. Their air-filled construction allows the tyre to flex slightly over uneven stones, which can improve comfort and help maintain contact with the ground. Compared with narrow, high-pressure solid tyres, they are less likely to transmit every vibration through the chair.
A wider tyre is usually more stable on loose surfaces because it spreads weight over a larger contact area. This can reduce the tendency for a wheel to sink, skid or push gravel aside. For gravel, a tyre that is too narrow can cut into loose material and make each push feel inefficient. A wider rear tyre generally rolls over small stones more confidently and adds stability. That extra width must be considered alongside the chair’s overall dimensions. Where possible, travel on the most compacted line rather than the looser gravel at the edges. On a manual chair, shorter, controlled pushes can help maintain direction. If the front castors begin to sink or catch repeatedly, it may be safer to turn back or seek another route rather than forcing the chair forward.
For longer outdoor trips, carry a pump, appropriate puncture repair supplies and any tools needed for your wheelchair.
