A power assist can make a well-configured manual chair easier to propel. An electric wheelchair can provide full powered mobility with less physical effort. Both can be life-changing, but they suit different users, environments and levels of support.

A power assist is a motorised system used with a manual wheelchair. Depending on the style, it may add power when you push the wheels, attach to the front of the chair to pull it along, or mount at the rear to help push the chair. The user may still steer and control the chair in a familiar way, although each system has its own controls and handling characteristics.
An electric wheelchair, often called a powered wheelchair or power chair, is a complete mobility device driven by motors and controlled through a joystick or another prescribed control method. It does not rely on the user pushing the wheels for movement. Electric wheelchairs are available in different drive configurations, seating options and control arrangements to suit a wide range of mobility requirements.
The practical distinction is this: power assist reduces the effort of using a manual wheelchair, while an electric wheelchair replaces manual propulsion altogether. When Power Assist May Be the Better Fit

For active manual wheelchair users, keeping the same chair can be a major advantage. You may retain the seating, back support, cushion, wheel position and compact frame that already work for you. A power assist can then provide extra support for longer trips, community access or a demanding workday.
Transport is another common reason people choose this path. Some power assist units can be removed before lifting the chair into a car, while others remain attached and require different loading arrangements. The total weight matters. A lightweight manual wheelchair may become considerably harder to lift once a power assist, battery and mounting hardware are added.
There are several broad power assist styles, and they feel quite different in use:

When an Electric Wheelchair Makes More Sense
An electric wheelchair is generally better suited to someone who cannot safely or consistently self-propel a manual wheelchair, even with assistance from a motorised add-on. This may include people with limited arm strength, reduced hand function, pain, fatigue, progressive conditions or a need to travel independently over longer distances every day.
A powered chair can provide reliable mobility without repeated pushing. For many users, that means preserving energy for work, family, study, appointments and community participation rather than spending it getting from one place to another.
Electric wheelchairs can also offer more sophisticated seating and positioning options. Depending on the model and prescription, this may include tilt, recline, elevating leg rests, seat elevation or customised supports. These features may be clinically significant for pressure management, posture, comfort, transfers and function. They also add complexity, weight and cost, so they should be selected around genuine needs rather than assumed to be necessary.
Drive configuration affects how an electric wheelchair performs. Mid-wheel drive models are often valued for tight turning indoors. Front-wheel and rear-wheel drive chairs can have different strengths outdoors, on slopes and when travelling over changes in terrain. Your home layout, vehicle access, footpaths, local surfaces and usual destinations all matter when comparing options.
The trade-off is portability. A power chair is usually much heavier and bulkier than a manual chair with a removable assist unit. It may require a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, hoist, ramp or modified vehicle setup. Storage, charging space and access through doorways also need to be considered before purchase.
Compare Your Everyday Routine, Not Just the Motor
The best equipment decision starts with the tasks that are difficult now. Think about a typical week rather than a single good day. How far do you travel independently? Are there hills between home, public transport and essential services? Do you need to fit the chair in a car boot? Will the chair be used mainly indoors, outdoors or across both settings?
It is also useful to consider who will use the equipment and who may need to handle it. A carer might be able to manage a compact manual chair and a removable power assist, but not safely lift a heavy power chair. On the other hand, a person who relies on support workers should not have to depend on someone else for propulsion if an electric wheelchair would allow safer independent movement.
Your seating setup should remain central to the decision. A motor will not fix poor posture, an unsuitable cushion, pressure concerns or a back support that no longer meets your needs. Check that any power assist is compatible with your wheelchair frame, wheel size, axle arrangement, brakes and seating components. Added weight or changed geometry can affect handling and stability.
Costs, Funding and Ongoing Care
The purchase price is only one part of ownership. Batteries have a service life, tyres wear, and motorised equipment requires periodic checks. Consider charging routines, replacement parts, servicing access and what happens if the device is unavailable for repair. Keeping suitable tyres, tubes, castors and basic maintenance items on hand can reduce disruption to everyday mobility.
For NDIS participants, the appropriate funding pathway depends on individual goals, functional needs and plan arrangements. More complex mobility equipment may require assessment and supporting documentation from relevant health professionals. It is sensible to discuss intended use, clinical needs and equipment compatibility early, particularly where seating, posture or pressure care is involved.
A trial is valuable wherever possible. Test the equipment on the surfaces that matter, including ramps, door thresholds, carpet, footpaths and slopes. Check your reach to controls, ability to transfer, turning space at home and how the equipment fits into your transport plan. A device that performs well in an open showroom may feel very different in a narrow hallway or on an uneven path.

Power assist can be an excellent solution when you value the flexibility of a manual wheelchair but need help to conserve energy and manage distance. An electric wheelchair may be the stronger choice when full powered mobility, advanced seating or consistent independence is needed throughout the day.
